Risk factors for epiploic foramen entrapment colic in a UK horse population: A prospective case-control study

Summary Reasons for performing study: Epiploic foramen entrapment (EFE) is a common cause of small intestinal strangulation in the horse and its epidemiology requires further investigation. Objectives: To identify horse- and management-level risk factors for EFE and to explore reasons for the apparent seasonality of this condition. Hypothesis: Horses exhibiting certain behaviours and those exposed to particular management practices that vary seasonally are at increased risk of EFE. Methods: A prospective unmatched, multicentre case-control study was conducted over 24 months in the UK. Data on 77 cases and 216 control horses were obtained from 9 collaborating clinics and logistic regression was used to identify associations between horse and management variables and the likelihood of EFE. Results: In a final multivariable model crib-biting/ windsucking behaviour was associated with the largest increase in likelihood of EFE. A history of colic in the previous 12 months, increased stabling in the previous 28 days and height of the horse also increased the likelihood of EFE. Horses with access to a mineral/salt lick, those easily frightened and horses not fed at the same time as others were at reduced risk of EFE. Conclusions: Horses exhibiting certain behaviours, those with a previous history of colic and horses of greater height appear to be at inherently greater risk of EFE. The increase in likelihood of EFE with increased duration of stabling may explain the apparent seasonality of this condition. Potential relevance: These findings assist identification of horses at high-risk of EFE and provide information on management strategies that may reduce this risk. If the observed associations are causal, avoiding sudden increases in duration of stabling, not feeding horses in the same group at the same time and providing a mineral/salt lick may reduce the likelihood of EFE. The risk factors identified in this study provide important clues to the aetiology of EFE. [source]


Quantitative analysis of postnatal neurogenesis and neuron number in the macaque monkey dentate gyrus

Abstract The dentate gyrus is one of only two regions of the mammalian brain where substantial neurogenesis occurs postnatally. However, detailed quantitative information about the postnatal structural maturation of the primate dentate gyrus is meager. We performed design-based, stereological studies of neuron number and size, and volume of the dentate gyrus layers in rhesus macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta) of different postnatal ages. We found that about 40% of the total number of granule cells observed in mature 5,10-year-old macaque monkeys are added to the granule cell layer postnatally; 25% of these neurons are added within the first three postnatal months. Accordingly, cell proliferation and neurogenesis within the dentate gyrus peak within the first 3 months after birth and remain at an intermediate level between 3 months and at least 1 year of age. Although granule cell bodies undergo their largest increase in size during the first year of life, cell size and the volume of the three layers of the dentate gyrus (i.e. the molecular, granule cell and polymorphic layers) continue to increase beyond 1 year of age. Moreover, the different layers of the dentate gyrus exhibit distinct volumetric changes during postnatal development. Finally, we observe significant levels of cell proliferation, neurogenesis and cell death in the context of an overall stable number of granule cells in mature 5,10-year-old monkeys. These data identify an extended developmental period during which neurogenesis might be modulated to significantly impact the structure and function of the dentate gyrus in adulthood. [source]


Variability of the masticatory process during chewing of elastic model foods

Many studies show a consistent individual chewing pattern; chewing being governed by a pattern generator and regulated by sensory feedback. The aim of this study was to determine the variation in chewing between sessions, replicates and subjects using elastic model foods. Fifteen young male subjects were selected to chew four food products differing in hardness. Four sessions were performed at 1-wk intervals for each subject and, within each session, the four model foods were presented 3 times each. Jaw movement was recorded simultaneously with masseter and anterior temporalis electromyographic activities. Several chewing characteristics increased progressively from one session to the next; the largest increase occurred from the 1st to the 2nd session, with little difference between the last two sessions. No differences were observed between the samples of the same food product within a session. As mastication progressed, the amplitude and speed of the cycles and the muscular work decreased progressively. The first cycle appeared to be very different from the subsequent for all parameters except for occlusal duration. Thus, under our experimental conditions, the origin and amount of variation in chewing patterns were identified and provide information to improve the accuracy and comparability of results in studies of mastication. Effect of temperature and moisture on rates of carbon mineralization in a Mediterranean oak forest soil under controlled and field conditions

Summary We examined the relationship between carbon mineralization (Cmin), moisture and temperature in a Mediterranean forest soil under controlled and field conditions. We studied the following. 1,The temperature sensitivity at three soil depths: soil samples were incubated at 4, 10, 20 and 30°C at optimal water content of 60% of water holding capacity (WHC). Values of Cmin of the top layer were more than 12 times faster than those measured in deeper layers. We found a temperature sensitivity factor (Q10) of 3.3, 2.7 and 2.2 for the 0,5 cm, 5,10 cm and 10,20 cm layers, respectively. 2,The relationship between Cmin, moisture and temperature (top layer). The sensitivity of Cmin to fluctuating moisture depended on temperature. However, the Q10 was not significantly affected by soil moisture. We fitted a multiple polynomial model that predicted Cmin as a multiplicative function of temperature and moisture (R2 > 0.99). 3,The response of Cmin of soil to rewetting after 1 and 24 hours. In all cases, the response was rapid. The soil incubated at 60% WHC or less responded positively to a sudden increase in water content, with the largest increase in the 20% WHC treatment. The model predicted Cmin in the field well when rewetting effects were taken into account (R2 > 0.81). These results indicate that sudden changes in soil moisture can lead to increased carbon mineralization during the dry summer. It is necessary to include such responses in models as they may represent a substantial loss of carbon in the overall carbon balance of Mediterranean ecosystems. [source]


How Did the Elimination of the US Earnings Test above the Normal Retirement Age Affect Labour Supply Expectations?,

H55; J22 Abstract We look at the effect of the 2000 repeal of the earnings test above the normal retirement age (NRA) on the self-reported probabilities of working full-time after ages 65 and 62 of male workers in the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Using administrative records on social security benefit entitlements linked to the HRS survey data, we can distinguish groups of respondents according to the predicted effect of the earnings test before its repeal on their marginal wage rate after the NRA. We use panel data models with fixed and random effects to investigate the effect of the repeal. We find that male workers whose predicted marginal wage rate increased because the earnings test was repealed had the largest increase in the subjective probability of working full-time after age 65. We find no significant effects of the repeal on the subjective probability of working full-time past age 62. [source]


Transformations of runoff chemistry in the Arctic tundra, Northwest Territories, Canada

Abstract The transformation of snowmelt water chemical composition during melt, elution and runoff in an Arctic tundra basin is investigated. The chemistry of the water flowing along pathways from the surface of melting snow to the 95·5 ha basin outlet is related to relevant hydrological processes. In so doing, this paper offers physically based explanations for the transformation of major ion concentrations and loads of runoff water associated with snowmelt and rainfall along hydrological pathways to the stream outlet. Late-lying snowdrifts were found to influence the ion chemistry in adjacent reaches of the stream channel greatly. As the initial pulse of ion-rich melt water drained from the snowdrift and was conveyed through hillslope flowpaths, the concentrations of most ions increased, and the duration of the peak ionic pulse lengthened. Over the first 3 m of overland flow, the concentrations of all ions except for NO increased by one to two orders of magnitude, with the largest increase for K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+. This was roughly equivalent to the concentration increase that resulted from percolation of relatively dilute water through 0·25 m of unsaturated soil. The Na+ and Cl, were the dominant ions in snowmelt water, whereas Ca2+ and Mg2+ dominated the hillslope runoff. On slopes below a large melting snowdrift, ion concentrations of melt water flowing in the saturated layer of the soil were very similar to the relatively dilute concentrations found in surface runoff. However, once the snowdrift ablated, ion concentrations of subsurface flow increased above parent melt-water concentrations. Three seasonally characteristic hydrochemical regimes were identified in a stream reach adjacent to late-lying snowdrifts. In the first two stages, the water chemistry in the stream channel strongly resembled the hillslope drainage water. In the third stage, in-stream geochemical processes, including the weathering/ion exchange of Ca2+ and Mg2+, were the main control of streamwater chemistry. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Changes in temperature extremes over Italy in the last 44 years

Abstract Changes in temperature extremes over Italy from 1961 to 2004 were evaluated on the basis of minimum and maximum temperatures measured by 49 synoptic stations uniformly distributed over the country. A set of extreme temperature indices of the Commission for Climatology/Climate Variability and Predictability (CCl/CLIVAR) Working Group on Climate Change Detection was calculated and statistically analysed in order to detect the presence of trends and quantify the variations of the indices for different time periods. Most of the indices, averaged over all stations, show a cooling trend until the end of the 1970s followed by a more pronounced warming trend in the last 25 years. The net variation of the indices reflects an increase in the extremes of the temperature distribution. Among the most significant results, an average increase of 12.3 summer days and 12.4 tropical nights in the overall 44 years are estimated. No significant differences between northern, central and southern Italy are found for most indices, indicating that the trends originate from large-scale climate features; however, the largest increase of tropical nights is observed at coastal stations. Synergistic effects of carbon fillers on shielding effectiveness in conductive nylon 6,6- and polycarbonate-based resins

Abstract Electrically conductive resins can be made by adding electrically conductive fillers to typically insulating polymers. Resins with an electrical resistivity of approximately 100 , cm or less can be used for electromagnetic and radio frequency interference shielding applications. This research focused on performing compounding runs followed by injection molding and shielding effectiveness (SE) testing of carbon filled nylon 6,6- and polycarbonate-based resins. The three carbon fillers investigated included an electrically conductive carbon black, synthetic graphite particles, and a milled pitch-based carbon fiber. For each polymer, conductive resins were produced and tested that contained varying amounts of these single carbon fillers. In addition, combinations of fillers were investigated by conducting a full 23 factorial design and a complete replicate in each polymer. The objective of this study was to determine the effects and interactions of each filler on the SE properties of the conductive resins. Carbon black caused the largest increase in SE. Also, each single filler and each two filler interaction caused a statistically significant increase in SE. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Quantifying the grazing impacts associated with different herbivores on rangelands

Summary 1Rangelands, produced by grazing herbivores, are important for a variety of agricultural, hunting, recreation and conservation objectives world-wide. Typically, there is little quantitative evidence regarding the magnitude of the grazing impact of different herbivores on rangeland habitats to inform their management. 2We quantified the grazing and trampling impact of sheep, cattle, red deer Cervus elaphus, rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus, mountain hares Lepus timidus and red grouse Lagopus lagopus on open-hill habitats in 11 areas of upland Scotland. The degradation of heather in upland Scotland Calluna vulgaris -dominated habitats, of conservation significance at a European scale, has been attributed, anecdotally, to increasing sheep and red deer populations. 3Field indicators of habitat condition were used to generate a five-point scale of impact in vegetation polygons of seven habitats. The presence of each herbivore species was attributed on the basis of ,signs' of occupancy. A Bayesian regression model was used to analyse the association of herbivore species with grazing impact on plant communities, controlling for environmental attributes. 4Overall the presence of sheep was associated with the largest increase (7/11 areas) in grazing and trampling impact of all herbivores. Cattle had the second largest impact but generally this was restricted to fewer areas and habitats than sheep. In contrast, impacts associated with wild herbivores tended to be small and only significant locally. 5Although red deer presence was associated with a significantly lower impact than sheep, this impact increased with increasing deer density at both land-ownership and regional scales. For sheep there was little or no evidence of density dependence. 6Synthesis and applications. The higher impact associated with sheep presence probably reflects their greater aggregation because of their limited ranging behaviour, exacerbated by sheep being herded in places convenient for land managers. Consequently, future reductions in sheep numbers as a result of reform of European Union farming policies may limit the extent of their impact, but not necessarily the local magnitude. However, reductions in sheep stocks may lead to increases in deer densities, with greater impact, particularly in heather-dominated habitats. Where habitat conservation is a priority this may well require a reduction in deer numbers. [source]


A CSOV study of the difference between HF and DFT intermolecular interaction energy values: The importance of the charge transfer contribution

Abstract Intermolecular interaction energy decompositions using the Constrained Space Orbital Variation (CSOV) method are carried out at the Hartree,Fock level on the one hand and using DFT with usual GGA functionals on the other for a number of model complexes to analyze the role of electron correlation in the intermolecular stabilization energy. In addition to the overall stabilization, the results provide information on the variation, with respect to the computational level, of the different contributions to the interaction energy. The complexes studied are the water linear dimer, the N -methylformamide dimer, the nucleic acid base pairs, the benzene,methane and benzene-N2 van der Waals complexes, [Cu+ -(ImH)3]2, where "ImH" stands for the Imidazole ligand, and ImH-Zn++. The variation of the frozen core energy (the sum of the intermolecular electrostatic energy and the Pauli repulsion energy) calculated from the unperturbed orbitals of the interacting entities indicates that the intramolecular correlation contributions can be stabilizing as well as destabilizing, and that general trends can be derived from the results obtained using usual density functionals. The most important difference between the values obtained from HF and DFT computations concerns the charge transfer contribution, which, in most cases, undergoes the largest increase. The physical meaning of these results is discussed. Joint line elevation in revision TKA leads to increased patellofemoral contact forces

Abstract One difficulty in revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the management of distal femoral bone defects in which a joint line elevation (JLE) is likely to occur. Although JLE has been associated with inferior clinical results, the effect that an elevated joint line has on knee contact forces has not been investigated. To understand the clinical observations and elaborate the potential risk associated with a JLE, we performed a virtual TKA on the musculoskeletal models of four subjects. Tibio- and patellofemoral joint contact forces (JCF) were calculated for walking and stair climbing, varying the location of the joint line. An elevation of the joint line primarily affected the patellofemoral joint with JCF increases of as much as 60% of the patient's body weight (BW) at 10-mm JLE and 90% BW at 15-mm JLE, while the largest increase in tibiofemoral JCF was only 14% BW. This data demonstrates the importance of restoring the joint line, as it plays a critical role for the magnitudes of the JCFs, particularly for the patellofemoral joint. JLE caused by managing distal femoral defects with downsizing and proximalizing the femoral component could increase the patellofemoral contact forces, and may be a contributing factor to postoperative complications such as pain, polyethylene wear, and limited function. © 2009 Orthopaedic Research Society. Baseline physiological state and the fMRI-BOLD signal response to apnea in anesthetized rats

Abstract To decipher the biophysical mechanism behind the fMRI-BOLD response to apnea and its dependence on the baseline cerebral blood flow and oxygenation, fMRI and laser Doppler flow (LDF) studies were carried out in anesthetized rats. Baseline cerebral blood flow (CBF) and PaO2 were modulated by ventilating with different gas mixtures namely, room air (21% O2), 100% O2, carbogen (95% O2+5% CO2), 2% CO2 in air or 5% CO2 in air, respectively. A decrease in BOLD signal intensity was observed after the onset of apnea with either room air, 2% CO2 or 5% CO2 ventilation. PaO2 and cerebral tissue PO2 decreased during apnea under these conditions. However, the apnea-induced BOLD signal intensity was unaffected with carbogen ventilation and increased with 100% O2 ventilation, during which PaO2 remained constant and cerebral tissue PO2 increased. When baseline CBF was high during hypercapnia, a faster decrease occurred in the apnea-induced BOLD signal. Apnea induced the largest increase in CBF of 85±25% when ventilated with 2% CO2 while a 44±8% increase was observed with room air. During the other ventilatory conditions, minimal or no significant change in CBF was observed during apnea. These results show a significant correlation between the BOLD signal change and tissue PO2 in response to apnea under different physiological conditions. Apnea-induced increase in CBF affects the magnitude of the BOLD signal response when PaO2 remains constant or changes minimally. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


Effects of carbon fillers in thermally conductive polypropylene based resins,

The thermal conductivity of insulating polymers can be increased by adding conductive fillers. One potential market for these thermally conductive resins is for fuel cell bipolar plates. In this study, varying amounts of three different carbon fillers (carbon black, synthetic graphite particles, and carbon nanotubes) were added to polypropylene. The effects of single fillers and combinations of the different fillers were studied via a factorial design. Each single filler caused a statistically significant increase in composite through-plane thermal conductivity at the 95% confidence level, with synthetic graphite causing the largest increase. All of the composites containing combinations of the different fillers caused a statistically significant increase in composite through-plane thermal conductivity. It is possible that thermally conductive pathways are formed that ,link' these carbon fillers, which results in increased composite thermal conductivity. Composites containing 80 wt% synthetic graphite had an in-plane thermal conductivity of 28.0 W/m·K, which is desired for bipolar plates (>20 W/m·K). POLYM. Left ventricular end-diastolic geometrical adjustments during exercise in endurance athletes

Summary The increase in left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic volume has recently been shown to explain more than 70% of the increase in stroke volume during upright exercise in endurance athletes. As the end-diastolic volume enhancement not could be explained by an increase in axial cavity length an augmentation in LV short-axis diameters is to be expected. To investigate LV end-diastolic geometrical alterations during exercise, 15 endurance athletes were examined using contrast exercise echocardiography. LV end-diastolic short-axis diameters were made from apical views at several LV cavity levels. From upright rest to upright exercise the LV end-diastolic internal cavity measurements increased significantly. During exercise, the LV cavity became geometrically more spherical with the largest increase in the LV end-diastolic short-axis cavity diameters in the mid and apical parts of the left ventricle. The LV internal long axis showed significant increase from rest to exercise but the absolute increase was small. [source]


Resistance, biguanide sorption and biguanide-induced pentose leakage during encystment of Acanthamoeba castellanii

Abstract Aims:, This study investigates the effects of biguanides during encystment of Acanthamoeba castellanii. Methods and Results:, A non-nutrient encystment system was used to investigate the changes in the levels of sorption (uptake) of three non-cysticidal concentrations (10, 20 and 50 ,g ml,1) of chlorhexidine diacetate (CHA) and polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) as well as their effects on viability and leakage of pentose sugars during the first 36 h of encystment. Trophozoites treated with CHA or PHMB were more sensitive and generally sorbed more of each biocide than cysts. During encystment, the largest increases in resistance developed between 18 and 36 h for both biguanides with the resistance emerging to biguanide concentrations of 10 or 20 ,g ml,1 between 18 and 24 h. At 50 ,g ml,1 resistance emerged between 24 and 36 h. There was a general decrease in biocide sorption during encystment between 0,24 and 0,21 h for CHA and PHMB, respectively, at a concentration of 50 ,g ml,1. The greatest decline in biguanide-induced pentose leakage was between 0 and 12 h. Conclusions:, The results suggest that during encystment some of the changes in the susceptibility to CHA or PHMB may be related to decreases in the levels of biocide sorption, which is limited by the developing cyst wall. Significance and Impact of the Study:, During encystation, changes occur in biguanide sensitivity. The physical barrier of the cyst wall may be an important factor in limiting biocide sorption. Changes in the Usage of Enterprise Funds by Large City Governments

Using a nationwide sample of large cities, this article analyzes changes in the use of enterprise funds during the past decade. The major findings are that (1) the aggregate number of enterprise funds increased, with the largest increases occurring in solid waste and drainage; (2) part of the increase was offset by the elimination of some enterprise funds, particularly in the area of recreational services; (3) 60 percent of the cities experienced one or more changes in the types of enterprise funds they used; (4) the revenues associated with most types of enterprise funds have increased at a faster rate than general fund revenues; and (5) some cities are using alternative fiscal structures (e.g., special revenue funds and discrete component units) to account for services that are reported as enterprise funds in other cities. A continuum of fiscal structures is presented as a framework for addressing why cities might choose one structure over another and what the possible implications of a particular fiscal structure might be.
