Shared near neighbours neural network model: a debris flow warning system

Abstract The main purpose of this study is to develop a new type of artificial neural network based model for constructing a debris flow warning system. The Chen-Eu-Lan river basin, which is located in Central Taiwan, is assigned as the study area. The creek is one of the most well-known debris flow areas where several damaging debris flows have been reported in the last two decades. The hydrological and geological data, which might have great influence on the occurrence of debris flows, are first collected and analysed, then, the shared near neighbours neural network (SNN + NN) is presented to construct the debris flow warning system for the watershed. SNN is an unsupervised learning method that has the advantage of dealing with non-globular clusters, besides presenting computational efficiency. By using SNN, the compiled hydro-geological data set can easily and meaningfully be clustered into several categories. These categories can then be identified as ,occurrence' or ,no-occurrence' of debris flows. To improve the effectiveness of the debris flow warning system, a neural network framework is designed to connect all the clusters produced by the SNN method, whereas the connected weights of the network are adjusted through a supervised learning method. This framework is used and its applicability and practicability for debris flow warning are investigated. Nursing students' experiences of their first encounter with death during clinical practice in Taiwan

Aims and objectives., The aim of this study was to elucidate the experiences of first encountering death by nursing students during clinical practice. The objective is to assist nursing educational and clinical professionals to provide essential assistance for nursing students who encounter patient death. Background., Increasingly, deaths are occurring in hospitals. However, there has been little qualitative research in Taiwan on the experiences of nursing students who encounter patient death for the first time. Design., A descriptive qualitative method was employed to explore nursing students' first experience with death during clinical practice in Taiwan. Methods., Purposive sampling, one-on-one, in-depth with semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data. Participants were selected from an acute haematological ward in a major teaching hospital in Central Taiwan. Narratives were analysed using Colaizzi's seven-step method. Results., Data saturation was achieved after interviewing 12 nursing students. The average age of the students was 20, and seven and half days was the average time spent attending dying patients. Three themes and eleven sub-themes were identified: Providing Care During the Dying Period (feelings of dread and terror, hardship of experiencing patient's life fading away, devotion to patient care and self-affirmation); Facing the Moment of Patient Death (state of being scared or trapped, emotional breakdown); Adjustment after Patient Death (acceptance or avoidance, growth or escape). Conclusions., Findings demonstrate the importance of understanding such first experiences, and the results are beneficial to clinical instructors and nursing personnel in understanding the students' pressure and difficulties experienced before, during and after the patients' death. Relevance to clinical practice., Several recommendations have been made, including teaching and support not only in the period of dying, but at the moment of patient death and postmortality. Avoiding topics about death in local culture have been noted. [source]


Elements in the Sera of Preschool Children Living in Central Taiwan

Abstract This study assessed elemental concentrations in the serum of 154 preschool children in central Taiwan via instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). A total of eight elements, Br, Cl, Fe, Na, Rb, Sc, Se and Zn of sera for Taiwanese preschool children living at four residential areas:Taichung city, Taichung urban townships and in a remote area inhabited by two groups of aborigines, Atayal and Bunun were determined. Standard reference materials (tomato leaves, NIST-SRM 1570a, and lichen, IAEA-336) were used as quality control standards to crosscheck the accuracy. Residential area, socioeconomic status and gender were shown to significantly influence serum levels of the eight trace elements. Statistical analysis revealed several different gender patterns via the two-tailed student's test. A quantified index of agreement (AT) was used to classify these elements. Small AT indicated a close consistency, while large AT indicated a larger fluctuation, or less agreement, such that the correlation between the elements could be interpreted using a series of quantified indices at the serum levels of preschool children. Variations of chemical compositions in coarse aerosols and fine aerosols in two successive episodes

Abstract Particulate matter with diameters less than 2.5 ,m (PM2.5) and ranging between 10 to 2.5 ,m (PM10-2.5) were simultaneously collected at four air-quality monitoring stations in the Taichung area of central Taiwan during the period of February 12 to 22, 2004. Two different types of PM10 episodes, a nonlocal dust-storm episode and a local episode, were observed in the present study. High concentrations of coarse aerosols occurred during the dust-storm episode, whereas high concentrations of fine aerosols were present during the local episode. Relatively high levels of Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Cl, in coarse aerosols were observed during the dust-storm episode. Very high concentrations of secondary aerosols (NH+4, SO2,4, and NO,3) in fine aerosols were observed during the local episode. The nitrate ion demonstrated the greatest increase in the ratios of ionic species to PM2.5 and ionic species to PM10-2.5 during the local episode. Significantly high ratios (0.444) of NO,3 to NO2 in fine aerosols were present during the local episode, indicating that the relatively high formation rate of NO,3 was one of the important factors leading to the increase of the NO,3 to PM2.5 ratio during the local episode. Results also showed that an abundant quantity of fine ammonium nitrate was formed during the local episode, and chloride depletion probably was the major pathway to form coarse NaNO3 during this episode. Viscoelastic,afterslip concurrence: a possible mechanism in the early post-seismic deformation of the Mw 7.6, 1999 Chi-Chi (Taiwan) earthquake

SUMMARY Observed coseismic data as well as 97 days of post-seismic GPS data for the Chi-Chi earthquake are used as constraints in the modelling of crustal evolution using the 3-D finite-element method. First, the coseismic GPS data are used to justify the use of the elastic earth model and the source rupture model. Subsequently, the most likely rheological model is determined by analysing several modelled time-dependent displacements for various viscosity structures. The range of viscosities of the lower crust in central Taiwan is determined in advance from laboratory measurements and the long-term strain rate. The estimated viscosity of 5.0 × 1017 Pa s seems to be very low and a relaxation time of 116 days seems very short, but the latter approximates the GPS measurement of 86 days. Since earlier studies have indicated that both the viscoelastic response model and the afterslip model may affect post-seismic deformation, we compare theoretical surface displacements for each of the two models that we evaluate. The results reveal that there is little doubt that while neither of these models alone is able to predict the GPS measurements well in a 97-day period, the combination of the two models improves the predictions considerably. We conclude that the afterslip mainly dominated Chi-Chi post-seismic deformation in the rupture area while the viscoelastic model did so elsewhere. [source]


Application of SAR interferometry to a large thrust deformation: the 1999 Mw= 7.6 Chichi earthquake in central Taiwan

SUMMARY Application of the interferometric method to four ERS2-SAR images acquired before and after the 1999 Chichi earthquake has allowed determination of the coseismic surface displacement in the footwall area of the Chelungpu fault. The interferometric results revealed a relative shortening in the round trip distance between the radar antenna and the ground of the footwall side of Chelungpu fault, during the earthquake. This shortening progressively increased from the west to the east and reaches the maximum amount of approximately 26 cm near the central segment of the Chelungpu fault. Our interferometric results have been precisely examined using a dense GPS network in the investigated area. We mapped the GPS coseismic measurements into the radar line of sight and implemented a forward simulation of SAR interferogram from this synthesized result to control our unwrapping performance. In this study, these two observations are compared with a 3-D dislocation model of the fault. Finally, a deformation analysis based on our interferometric result has indicated that a segment with irregular deformation behaviour can be distinguished in the footwall area of the Chelungpu fault. This segment may result from either the influence of inherited basement faults or the presence of a structural terrace that provide local opportunities for superficial deformation. [source]


Seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori Infection Among Schoolchildren and Teachers in Taiwan

Abstract Background:,Helicobacter pylori are associated with chronic antral gastritis that is related to duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, and probably gastric adenocarcinoma. Infection of H. pylori during childhood is considered an important risk factor for gastric carcinoma in adult life. Materials and Methods:, To examine the epidemiologic characteristics of H. pylori infection among schoolchildren in central Taiwan, a community-based survey was carried out using stratified sampling in 10 elementary schools and three junior high schools including students and theirs teachers. Serum specimens of 1950 healthy schoolchildren (aged 9,15 years old) and 253 teachers who were randomly sampled were screened for the H. pylori antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Statistical analysis was performed by using the spss for Windows statistical software system. Results:, A total of 332 subjects were H. pylori antibodies positive, giving an overall prevalence of 15.1%. The age-specific seropositive rates were 11.0% in 9,12 years age group, 12.3% in 13,15 years age group, and 45.1% in the teacher group. The older the age, the higher the seroprevalence (OR = 11.53; 95% CI = 6.73,19.74; p < .001 for children vs. teachers). There was no difference in the seroprevalence of H. pylori infection by gender, ethnicity, geographical area, socioeconomic level, parental education, sibship size, family members, and source of drinking water. Conclusion:, The teachers had a much higher prevalence of H. pylori antibodies. The finding suggests that these teachers (adults) might be infected in their early childhood and implies that the poor environmental and hygienic conditions might be responsible for it. It seemed that poor water supply system, sewage disposal, and other environmental hygiene in adult might play some roles in H. pylori infection in Taiwan (before early 1980s). [source]


Investigating the impact of the Chi-Chi earthquake on the occurrence of debris flows using artificial neural networks

Abstract Debris flows have caused enormous losses of property and human life in Taiwan during the last two decades. An efficient and reliable method for predicting the occurrence of debris flows is required. The major goal of this study is to explore the impact of the Chi-Chi earthquake on the occurrence of debris flows by applying the artificial neural network (ANN) that takes both hydrological and geomorphologic influences into account. The Chen-Yu-Lan River watershed, which is located in central Taiwan, is chosen for evaluating the critical rainfall triggering debris flows. A total of 1151 data sets were collected for calibrating model parameters with two training strategies. Significant differences before and after the earthquake have been found: (1) The size of landslide area is proportioned to the occurrence of debris flows; (2) the amount of critical rainfall required for triggering debris flows has reduced significantly, about half of the original critical rainfall in the study case; and (3) the frequency of the occurrence of debris flows is largely increased. The overall accuracy of model prediction in testing phase has reached 96·5%; moreover, the accuracy of occurrence prediction is largely increased from 24 to 80% as the network trained with data from before the Chi-Chi earthquake sets and with data from the lumped before and after the earthquake sets. Counterpropagation fuzzy,neural network for streamflow reconstruction

Abstract This study combines neural networks and fuzzy arithmetic to present a counterpropagation fuzzy,neural network (CFNN) for streamflow reconstruction. The CFNN has a rule-based control, a modified self-organizing counterpropagation network, and a fuzzy control predictor. It can generate rules automatically by increasing the training data to improve the accuracy of streamflow reconstruction. The CFNN establishes the input and output relationship of a watershed without set-up parameters. The parameters are estimated systematically by the approach converging to an optimal solution. One sequence of data generated by the Monte Carlo method is used to demonstrate the accuracy of the CFNN. The streamflow data of the Da-chia River, in central Taiwan, is also used to evaluate the performances of the CFNN. Mass movements caused by recent tectonic activity: The 1999 Chi-chi earthquake in central Taiwan

Abstract The Chi-chi earthquake (MS = 7.7), which occurred in September 1999, seriously damaged central Taiwan. Approximately 2 years later (July 2001), the Toraji typhoon brought a heavy rainstorm (650 mm rain/day) and triggered widespread landslides in central Taiwan and parts of eastern Taiwan. Approximately 10 000 Chi-chi earthquake-induced landslides and 6000 Toraji typhoon-related mass movements were delineated in an area of 2400 km2 using Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT; French earth resource satellite) images. The landslide distribution could be closely related to the distribution of peak ground acceleration registered during the Chi-chi earthquake. The study area was composed of Tertiary sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, whose age and induration increased eastward. The earthquake-induced landslides were mostly distributed in the region between the Chelungpu Fault and the Lishan Fault to the east, whereas they were few in the region east of the Lishan Fault. The Toraji typhoon in 2001 severely damaged both regions that had been shattered by the Chi-chi earthquake in 1999. The occurrence of earthquake-induced landslides can be correlated with epicentral distance, and their occurrence has more influence from the rock type than from the ground motion. [source]


A theory of meaning of caregiving for parents of mentally ill children in Taiwan, a qualitative study

Aims and objectives., The aim of this study is to generate a theory of meaning of care-giving for parents of mentally ill children in Taiwan. Background., Studies indicate that the meaning of care-giving plays an important role in the psychological adjustment of care-givers to care-giving. With a positive meaning of care-giving, care-givers can accept their roles and adapt to them more readily. Design., The research employs the qualitative method of grounded theory, the inquiry is based on symbolic interactionism. Methods., Twenty parental care-givers of children with schizophrenia were recruited at a private hospital in central Taiwan. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. A comparative method was used to analyse the text and field notes. Results., Responsibility (zeren) emerges as the core category or concept. Responsibility expresses broadly the behavioural principles that are culturally prescribed and centred on familial ethics and values. Related concepts and principles that influence caregiver actions and affections include a return of karma, challenges from local gods and fate. By maintaining their culturally prescribed interpretations of care-giving, parents hope to give care indefinitely without complaints. Conclusions., The findings clearly suggest that the meaning of care-giving is determined through a process of internal debate that is shaped by culturally specific concepts. The paper attempts to explain some of these culturally specific determinants and explanations of care-giving behaviour. Relevance to clinical practice., The theory contributes knowledge about the meaning of care-giving for parents of mentally ill children in Taiwan. It should be useful reference for mental health professionals, who provide counselling services to ethnically Taiwanese care-givers. [source]


The experiences of carers in Taiwanese culture who have long-term schizophrenia in their families: a phenomenological study

Abstract Schizophrenia is a severe illness with little hope of recovery and requires long-term care. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of carers who live with someone with long-term schizophrenia, within the cultural context of Taiwan. The study was conducted in a community setting in central Taiwan. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to explore the experiences of carers. Purposive sampling was used by selecting the carers who were close relatives of the clients, had lived with the clients for at least 1 year and bore most of the responsibilities. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect the data and narratives were analysed using Colaizzi's (1978) seven-step method. Data saturation was achieved after interviewing 10 carers. Three themes and eight sub-themes were identified: burdens of caring (helping clients' illness, lack of professional support and family conflicts), emotional burdens (sadness, worry and fear) and strategies of coping (cognitive and religious coping strategies). Our study supported the importance for nurses to understand the cultural aspects of mental illness, particularly the widespread cultural beliefs and patterns of help seeking behaviours, in order to provide culturally sensitive health care. Early onset pneumonia in patients with cholinesterase inhibitor poisoning

ABSTRACT Background and objective: Organophosphates and carbamates are potent cholinesterase inhibitors that are widely used as insecticides in agriculture. Pneumonia is a frequent complication of cholinesterase inhibitor poisoning (CIP) and a risk factor for death. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the risk factors for pneumonia in patients with CIP. Methods: The medical records of 155 patients, who were treated for CIP in a 1300-bed medical centre in central Taiwan, from January 2002 to December 2004, were retrospectively analysed. Pneumonia was diagnosed by a new or persistent infiltrate on CXR, as well as clinical symptoms. Demographic data, comorbidities, acute respiratory failure and in-hospital mortality were also recorded. Results: Of the 155 patients, 31 (20%) died and 92 (59.4%) developed acute respiratory failure. Thirty-four patients (21.9%) were diagnosed with early onset pneumonia during hospitalization. Acute respiratory failure (OR 12.10, 95% CI: 2.55,57.45), underlying cardiovascular disease (OR 3.02, 95% CI: 1.02,8.91), undergoing gastric lavage at peripheral hospitals (OR 6.23, 95% CI: 1.52,25.98) and development of respiratory failure at the study centre after gastric lavage (OR 3.43, 95% CI: 1.17,10.0) were predictive factors for early onset pneumonia. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (OR 23.58, 95% CI: 6.03,92.29), early onset pneumonia (OR 7.45, 95% CI: 2.02,27.5) and lower Glasgow coma score (OR 1.26, 95% CI: 1.08,1.48) were predictive factors for mortality. Conclusions: Pneumonia was a significant risk factor for death in patients with CIP. In addition to aggressive management of patients with CIP who develop respiratory failure, careful respiratory evaluation before and after gastric lavage would help to decrease the incidence of early onset pneumonia in patients with CIP.
